What will make you different !!

“I’m convinced that about half of what separates successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.”
Everyone says they go the extra mile. Almost no one actually does. Most people who do go there think, “Wait…no one else is here…why am I doing this?” And they leave, never to return.
That’s why the extra mile is such a lonely place.
That’s also why the extra mile is a place filled with opportunities.
Be early. Stay late. Make the extra phone call. Send the extra email. Do the extra research.
Don’t wait to be asked — offer.
Every time you do something, think of one extra thing you can do…especially if other people aren’t doing that extra thing.
Sure, it’s hard. But that’s what will make you different.
And over time, that’s what will make you incredibly successful.

Acharya Devo Bhava...Guru Devo Bhava !!

"Agnyaana Timiraandhasya, Gnyaana Anjana Shalaakayaa, Chakshuhu Unmeelitam Yenam, Tasmai Sri Gurave Namaha. "

Meaning: A Guru can save us from the pangs of ignorance (darkness) by applying to us the balm of knowledge or awareness of the Supreme, I salute such a Guru !!

For years, we have grown on the images of Guru-Shishya engaged in teaching-learning under the learning tree. From times immemorial, from Dronacharya to Radhakrishnan, & Rabindranath Tagore we have revered and romanticised the superhero status of a great teacher. Their students in turn made the teachers proud, giving the mentor-mentee relationships an alluring charm.

Today India has 320 million students in over 1 million schools, 30,000 colleges and 500 universities. The gross enrollment ratio in colleges is a measly 12.4 per cent. Employability rate is estimated at 25 per cent. 25 per cent of teachers are absent from work.

Only 50 per cent of teachers are actually engaged in the act of teaching while at work. India faces a shortage of 1.2 million teachers. Something has going horribly wrong. To break the vicious cycle, we will need to start with the gardener, who must sow the virtuous seed-the teacher.

The classroom has evolved tremendously. After arrival of various writing systems in ancient time, hornbooks came in 1400 in England and US. The blackboards invaded classrooms only in 1801. Instructional TV and Radio ruled the roost from 1940-90 when personal computers and internet took over. What next?

The classroom of the future will be wireless. Students may choose not to carry books; they won't leave home without the tablets. Yes, the tablets will be all-pervasive. From KG to PG, a student will be connected real-time to his teacher. The content delivery will be automated. The assessments will be online and the classroom will often be outside the four walls of the institute. The good news is that we can produce the rockstar teachers of the future.

Confucius rightly said, I hear and I forget. I see and I believe. I do and I understand. We need to bring back learning experiences to the classroom. Seven principles of learning; prior knowledge, organisation of knowledge, motivation, mastery, practice and feedback, student development and classroom climate and metacognition. All of this boils down to a student-centric learning. This transition from teachercentric teaching is not just imminent but an unstoppable reality.

A teacher is trainable. The future does not need fountain-heads of knowledge and super-hero teachers of yore. The knowledge will be digitised on the tablet, available on call. But synthesising and organising that knowledge will not be easy. For effective and purposeful synthesising, the good-old teacher will always be required.

Only the teacher can start the virtuous cycle with an inspired student wanting to be like his teacher, leading to better student outcomes. Better life skills and employability skills will lead to greater success of these students leading to more children inside schools and colleges, more fees and revenues and eventually higher wages and growing teachers. The search for excellence in the Indian Education system must start inside & outside the classrooms- with the teacher. We need more Nalanda & Visva-Bharti like Universities again.

TEEKA LAGAO !!

Your Vote. Your Right. Your Might

Go Ahead and plan your role in strengthening our democracy.Excercise your right to vote.

Why should you vote?

- Elected Representatives make the laws and policies that govern how we live. So why not have a say in that.
- Voting is the single most powerful way to send a message to governments and politicians. Even more powerful than candle-marches and hunger-strikes. In assembly elections held recently, the longest-serving democratically elected Communist government in the world was ousted from West Bengal,  the 2G-scam tainted DMK was thrown out of power in Tamil Nadu, the illegal mining BJP lords of Karnataka were defeated and the all-powerful Behenji Mayawati was rejected by UP’s voters.
- If you don’t vote you really should have no right to complain about government decisions you don’t like (no matter how much they actually suck).
-India is the largest democracy in the world. The right to vote and more importantly the exercise of franchise by the eligible citizens is at the heart of every democracy. We, the people, through this exercise of our right to votehave the ultimate power to shape the destiny of country by electing our representatives who run the Government and take decisions for the growth, development and benefit of all the citizens.
MY VOTE MY GOVERNMENT…MAKE THE REAL DIFFERENCE
Like every year, you know that this July when it rains, you will be stuck in traffic. The streets will fill up and you may have to get out of your car and trudge home through the rivulets, praying that there isn’t an open manhole where you walk. You are going to complain about the clogged drains, and the slums, and the hawkers getting in the way; the crowded trains that stink; the malaria; and then talk about how India needs to be more like London or Singapore, where everything is amazing. Sounds familiar, right?
It’s okay though. You know where to lay the blame – The Goverment. A couple of curses thrown its way and you will carry on through the disorder because that is how it must be. You don’t have the time to bother with all that. Ultimately, you have a nice home to go to, where you can put your feet up and lose yourself in that daily soap. We know. You work hard. You have no time to go vote on a Thursday afternoon. And if you get some time off, well, you need a break. You aren’t going to run across the city for something as pointless as voting.
But this monsoon, when you’re stuck in traffic somewhere, trying to get to a doctor so you can get tested for malaria, we want you to remember that Thursday afternoon and blame yourself. If you don’t vote, you can’t complain. This year, we urge you to vote.
So you’re young, a student, and you believe the world is your oyster because India is booming and the opportunities are many. Why should you care about the economy and rising prices? There’s still time right?
Wrong. Time is short, and you should really be asking the government what they’re doing about this.
BE SMART VOTE SMART.
PROUD TO BE VOTER !!  READY TO VOTE !!

What are the basic do’s and don’t’s as polling day
approaches?
As a voter you should also know the aspects that are considered as
corrupt practices or electoral offences:
(i) Offering or accepting money or any other gratification either to vote for
or not to vote for a particular candidate.
(ii) Inducement by way of liquor, feast, gifts, etc. to vote for or not to vote
for a particular candidate.
(iii) Inducement to vote or not to vote for a particular candidate on the
grounds of religion, caste, community, sectarian beliefs or place of
birth.
(iv) Threat to an elector of ex-communication if he votes for or against a
particular candidate.
(v) Offer of free conveyance to any elector to go to or from any polling
Station.

The Poisoned Plate- Mid Day Meal

As per the Supreme Courts's order Govt. of India Started Mid Day Meal, but it's mismanagement and irregularities are known to everyone. Every second day a new scam related to mid-day meal is in news, recently when number of children died in Patna, a big question mark arise about the hygiene and quality of food given to future of our country. Govt is spending crore on running this scheme so that more n more children enroll in school and can get the education, but what's the use of spending such huge amount when govt is not able to mange the things well, when they are not able to provide quality of food, then how can we expect the quality education n future for younger ones. Contrasting to this there are some NGOs who are working same model, but their work is really commendable, like Aksaya Patra Foundation...unlimited food for education(ISKCON). The organization distributes freshly cooked, healthy meals daily to 1.3 million underprivileged children in 9,000 government schools through 20 locations in 9 states across India. Built on a public-private partnership, It costs just Rs. 750 to feed a child daily for the entire school year due to government subsidy and provision of grains and state-of-the-art technology. For many of the children, this is their only complete meal for the day. It gives them an incentive to come to school and stay in school and provides them with the necessary nutrients — becoming the food for education.

Centralized and decentralized kitchens

Assets such as state-of-the-art centralized kitchens are constructed and maintained across regions to ensure timely mass production of over 100,000 meals in most hygienic condition every day. Continuous R&D is taken up leading to innovations in the construction process. As construction of such kitchens are not feasible in all locations. For example, in Baran, which is a remote village and children catered to are in 100ds, it is more feasible to have a decentralized kitchen. The kitchen would be set up in a small premises and food is cooked by a few employees from the local region, making whole process cost effective and generating other benefits such as women employment, etc.
Akshaya Patra Blue Bus delivers food to the schools once the hot nutritious meals are ready.

Impact

Surveys have shown that in areas where Akshaya Patra provides meals, student enrolment for Standard 1 has significantly increased to 41%. Its efforts to get children to school by eradicating their hunger has contributed to the right of every Indian child to get access to education.
  • An impact study of the program showed an improvement in school enrollment and dropout rates with a continuous increase in classroom performance. The foundation aims to serve 5 million children daily by 2020.
  • The Harvard Business School did a case study on Akshaya Patra in 2007 on Akshaya Patra's model for precise time management.
  • The US Congressional Hunger Center (CHC) has awarded an International Fellowship to Akshaya Patra, chosen from 35 other nominated social organizations around the world.
  • The World Economic Forum invited Akshaya Patra to share its experiences for The Hunger Project in Africa.

Even renowned organisations such as World Economic Forum wants this NGO to share it's experience then why can't govt. of India can learn something from them..how they maintain all the quality and standards without spending large amount as govt is doing right now.
